How to Keep a Character’s Face Consistent in AI Video
Why faces, hair and clothes change between cuts, and 5 ways to keep the same person with a character sheet, a signature prop and the same character line.
Why does the face change from cut to cut?
AI video tools make every clip separately. Even with the same prompt, the model redraws the person each time, so without a reference the eyes, hair length and clothes drift a little. Viewers notice "that's a different person" within three seconds.
1. Make one character sheet
A character sheet is one image with the front, side and back views plus 4–5 expressions. Fill in the blanks in the character sheet maker, copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT, Gemini (Nano Banana) or Higgsfield. Characters from the scenario builder fill in their name and role with one button.
- A large front-facing face
- The 4–5 expressions your story actually uses
- Full body from the front, 3/4, side and back
- No text labels on the sheet. They usually come out garbled.
2. Add the same sheet to every clip
Every time you generate a clip in Seedance or Kling, add that sheet as the reference image. Skip it once and that cut becomes someone else. With two characters, add both sheets.
3. Pick one signature prop
Give each character one item, like a watch, headphones, a hair clip or a red scarf, and keep it in every cut. Even if the face shifts a little, viewers read the prop as the same person.
4. Start every prompt with the same character line
Put the exact same description, like "woman in her 40s, shoulder-length brown wavy hair, ivory blouse", at the start of every prompt. Change the wording and the model draws a new person. The scenario builder's per-cut prompts include a "same faces as the character sheet" line in every cut.
5. Start connected shots from the last frame
For cuts that continue in the same place, use the previous clip's last frame as the start image. The face, lighting and background all carry over.
Checklist
- One character sheet per character
- The sheet as reference in every clip
- One signature prop per character
- The same character line in every prompt
- Connected cuts start from the last frame
